THANKSGIVING 2023 from SURF FREE OR DIE on Vimeo.

The week of Thanksgiving was one for the ages. Sunday November 19th, 2023 was one of the best days of the year.
All the points were firing as were the beach breaks. And then on Thanksgiving morning, the day broke with a fresh
new swell. While it was nowhere as good as the 19th, it was certainly nothing to sneeze at. Again, all the points
and all the beaches were working. Like I said it was a Great week.
The music is by my nephew Jesse Joseph (qwillmusic.com) and as always it fits perfectly.
And once again this video features all local surfers surfing local waves.
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know that I am personally thankful for EVERYTHING.
I mean it. I am thankful for everyone in my life. From my family to my friends. From the ocean
to the woods. I love and I am so grateful and thankful to have them all in my life.
This movie is only 13 minutes long. I hope you enjoy it.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

NEXT BLOG December 8th, 2024.
All future Blogs will be posted on the 1st and 3rd week of every month (give or take a day). *Also in the event of any significant swell I will post the week of that swell. Although the blog is now bi-weekly, I'm certainly not gonna pass up a decent swell. So while it's basically going to be every other week, I left it open for some wiggle room.

THE TERRIBLE TYSON PAUL FIGHT.
ANDY PALEY REST IN PEACE.
DICKIE BURNS REST IN PEACE.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

I am a big fight fan. I grew up watching all the greats. From Rocky Marciano to Muhammad Ali. My brothers Johnny and David and myself were really big Tyson fans. When he first burst on the scene there was nobody like him. Those vicious left hooks and devastating uppercuts sent many a opponent tumbling to the mat. There was nobody like him. Prior to TYSON there was Mohammed Ali. Johnny and I were big Ali fans. But Ali got old and retired and when he did, there was a big void in the Heavyweight division. Then along came Mike Tyson. IRON MIKE was a devastating boxer who made his opponents tremble with fear. For good reason. He was a beast in the ring.

Yes he had his ups and downs but at his peak? He was unstoppable.

So of course we were all going to watch this fight. As crazy as it appeared to be. But Jake Paul is an up and coming fighter and he knows a thing or two about marketing. I admit I fell prey to the hype. I bought into all. Hook, line, and sinker. And I got my son Max to watch it with me. Max is also a big fight fan. He never got to see Tyson in his prime though. In fact the very first fight Max saw was when Tyson bit Holyfield's ear off. Not exactly a good introduction to the sport.

But alas, here we all were. Ready to watch a 58yr old Mike Tyson fight a 28yr old Jake Paul. I also admit, I secretly thought Tyson could (if he trained hard enough) beat Paul. All he had to do was come out strong in the first few rounds. And do his body trademark combo. A heavy shot to the body followed by his signature uppercut. It would have been lights out for Jake Paul. Looks easy enough to do on paper. But first things first.

The under fight between Amanda Serrano and Katy Taylor was a great fight. In fact, it ended up being 100 times better than the main attraction.

This fight was one for the ages. Paul and Tyson wished they fought 1/8 of what they both did. This was a fight from start to finish. The nod went to Katy Taylor. Who I thought did a good job and it appeared to me that she did in fact win. That's the key word. "Appeared to be. For you see the BIGGEST loser of the night had to be NETFLIX. My God it was awful. Every single person who watched it on their TV's experienced some kind of technical difficulties. The screen kept locking up and pix-elating into hell. I am telling you it was by far the worse TV viewing experience of my life. And that is saying something.

It was beyond frustrating. The ONLY saving grace was the fact that I did not have to go through the PAY PERVIEW Deals. If you had NETFLIX you were in. Well, we had NETFLIX but we were anything but satisfied. The screen would lock up and not unravel. I mean it was so frustrating I wanted to scream. Though I believe I did scream a few times.

The fight itself? A complete FAKE and JOKE. It was embarrassing. There were no victors. Only losers. In fact, the biggest losers of the night were us fight fans. I am still pissed off that neither fighter made an attempt to actually pretend to fight. What fools we all are for believing this fight was going to be real. It was as fake as the WWE. Never again. Good on you Jake Paul you made yourself quite a bundle of money. And as far as Tyson? I hope you made money too Mike. Just don't do it again. Retire with grace and humility. Do not stoop to these embarrassing lows.

Ed O'Connell was one of the most loved surf photographers in New England. A US ARMY Vietnam Veteran who saved the lives of so many ARMY Grunts in Nam in 68-69 as a Medic on board those Dust Off Hueys. He was a close and dear friend of mine.

When he passed on July 1st, 2014 I swore I'd keep his memory and legacy alive by giving him this weekly corner. He loved surfing and he loved taking photos of all the surfers. Not just those who could really stand out. He shot every one. As long as I shall live and breathe the salt air, there will be a corner dedicated to Ed.

ED'S CORNER November 24th, 2024

This is Erica Nardone way back in 2009. If I had to guess I'd say it was the Wall. That's a nice looking wave and I can picture this day and this ride all in my mind. I know pretty much where she would have been surfing, and I can just imagine the whole scene unfolding. It's good that we have these photos.

Each time I post one we can virtually take a trip back in time and remember it all. I'm sure Erica herself remembers. Thanks again Ed for another great shot of one of our own. Photo by Ed O'Connell

COMING NEXT MONTH DECEMBER 2024

CLICK THE IMAGE ABOVE TO SEE A LARGER VERSION.

It's basically my memoir. The last 73 plus years of my life all condensed into two formats. The shorter printed version and the longer Online version. I apologize for this taking so damn long, but I've had so many crazy stories in my life that I needed to include them all. Though the shorter printed version will only have the best of the best.

The problem is I need to cut down the 1000 page Online version down to 350-450 to fit in the printed version. And to be completely honest with you, I am having a hard time deciding what stays and what goes. I have been literally spinning my wheels and it has been beyond frustrating. At times I feel like a complete failure. It has been beyond stressful. And I have jokingly said that this book will be the death of me yet.

I suppose I should hire a professional editor to cut through the RALPH FATELLO story and take out the fat and leave the prime beef. Having my life stories ending up on the cutting room floor has been difficult at best.

This book that I have been writing the last 15 years or so will be out long after I hit my 20th Year Anniversary of this Blog. And that will be double the reason to celebrate. BOOK and BLOG. And YES, there will be a book signing. And I will let you all know in advance, where and when. The book will be available in both hard cover and soft cover on AMAZON, BARNES & NOBLE, INGRAM, GOOGLE BOOKS, and KOBO PUBLISHING.

Most of my close friends have heard some of these stories first hand. But trust me, with over 100 stories, there's a handful that none of you have ever heard. It's true. Be patient my friends. It should be out sometime in December of 2024. But if I don't? January will have to suffice. I'm sorry for being so late.

ANDY PALEY 73 PASSES AWAY.

I've known Andy since the 70's. He is a true legend in the music world. There's not enough time or space to share with you all the things he has done, and who has worked with in his life. But for starters, he has worked with Brian Wilson of the BEACH BOYS, Patti Smith, The RAMONES, MADONNA, and so many more. Including his work on the DICK TRACEY movie and his recent work on SPONG BOB SQUAREPANTS.

Click on this link to read an article in the LA Times about Andy.

Andy Paley, producer of Brian Wilson's comeback LP, dies at 73 - Los Angeles Times

I was never with Andy in the times that I knew him, when we didn't laugh. Whether in person or over the phone. All we ever did was laugh. I've known Andy since 1978, He and his brother Jonathan are still to this day very good friends of mine. And my heart is breaking for him and his immediate family. His wife Heather, his twin boys Charlie and Jackson, and his three sisters. And a whole boatload of fellow musicians, entertainers, and good friends. Do yourselves a favor and read the LA times article on Andy. Or just google his name.

Andy and Jonathan Paley made Boston their main base. But they really were from New York and then LA. But it would be an understatement to say the impact that Andy had on the music world was huge. It was.
These two brothers were local and national icons in the pop music world. It is still hard to believe that Andy is gone. When we heard recently that he was sick we (Me, Anne Marie Foley, and Cory) were planning on driving to Vermont to see him. But things took a turn for the worse. And he passed a few days later. Thank God he called Anne Marie and she had a chance to speak with him.

One of the things that I am most thankful for was, it was Andy who talked Cory into going to SPIT in Boston on December 23rd, 1983 to see the Barry Marshall and the Rocking Robins Christmas show that night. One of the things that Andy told Cory was "My friend Ralph Fatello is going to be playing the LITTLE DRUMMER BOY dressed in his combat fatigues." That was only partly right. I was actually dressed up but I did play the LITTLE DRUMMER BOY like Hendrix. But it was enough to get Cory to go to that show. And as most of you already know, that night changed our lives. So thank you for that Andy.

Andy also produced the French female singer Victoria Joueuse that is featured in the GRANITE GIRLS movie. The movie is posted at the top of this page. Check it out.

Elliott Easton from the CARS writes:

"One of my dearest friends of over 40 years, Andy Paley is gone. We shared so many musical adventures with Brian Wilson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Mandy Barnett, soundtrack work, all the projects for Seymour Stein, and so many other artists. We shared some of the best times together, always laughing and having a ball. I'm gonna miss him so much, he was one of those special people in one's life. Rest Easy, Andy. Here's the last bit of music we made together. My deepest condolences to his wife Heather, his sons Charlie and Jackson, and of course my deepest sympathies to his brother Jonathan and the rest of the Paley family.

For the Jerry Lee album, we cut the tracks at Mark Linett's studio in Glendale, then Andy took the tracks to Argent in Memphis to record Jerry. On one of the tracks, I played a solo (in LA, before Jerry put his parts on). Andy had Jerry yell, "pick it Elliot!" before the solo so Jerry yells "pick it Ellit!" as though I was in the room with him, and it's on the record. God Bless Andy, just the sweetest guy."
Elliot Easton lead guitarist The CARS

Anne Marie Foley writes:

"In my early 20’s we were a couple and we had so many fun times but when we weren’t a couple we always stayed amazing friends, never lost touch and saw each other whenever he visited NYC and more.
For those of you who knew Andy, you won’t be surprised at this amazing memory I have about him.
I was working at Strawberries Records in downtown Boston (at some point I hired Andy to work there) anyway, I get a call at work from Andy and he said he wanted to have lunch with me and to meet him at a specific bench at the Boston Commons not far from where he was living. I said I would and got to the bench and waited for Andy. As I looked in the direction I knew he would be coming from I see Andy in a beautiful suit carrying a real silver tray with our lunch on it.

It wasn’t just the silver tray, there was a silver pitcher, silver teacups, silver salt and pepper shakers and a small vase with a rose. He walked 2 blocks carrying that heavy tray just to do something so special for me. I couldn’t believe it! He stood in front of me and said “this is lunch!” It was the sweetest thing any guy has ever done for me and one thing….we weren’t even dating then. We were just friends. That was Andy!! I will forever miss him, especially his laugh."

Anne Marie Foley

The Paley Brothers playing together again in 2018. Elliott Easton played with them that night too.

I don't know how or where. But I believe I will see you again Andy. Somewhere, somehow, I have a feeling I've not seen the last of you. Until that time. It was an honor and a privilege to know you and to be your friend. I'll be staying in touch with Jonathan. Please visit your boys and Heather in their dreams. Let them know, you are OK and it's all going to be OK. Thank you for everything my friend. Especially for arranging the meeting of me and Cory.

DICKIE BRYNES HAS PASSED AWAY
Known as Ricardo down in Rincoin, PR he was and is a true NH surf legend. I'll have more on Dickie's life and times in NH and PR in another week or so. Meanwhile, here's a couple of photos that I could post. The one with all the boys in their tuxedos was at Stan and Mindy Bocko's wedding

That's Stan and Mindy at the bottom of this photo with Pat Hogan and Dickie Byrnes standing side by side at Stan and Mindy's wedding.

The photo above was sent to me by Dickie Byrnes. From left to right: Barry Renderer, Dickie Byrne, Greg Jardis on his knee, with Pat Hogan 2nd from the right. The photo was taken on Acorn Ave at Pat Hogan’s house. This was the PLAICE COVE Surf Club. According to Dickie, Barry Renderer was the BEST ever having just moved to NH from Santa Cruz. I remember Barry well enough to acknowledge what Dickie said. Barry passed away about 15-20 years ago. He will be included in the IN MEMORIAM Page of Surfers we have lost.

And now sadly, I'll be including Dickie.

SPEAKING OF TURKEYS...

I'm not sure how Ole Khaliddy was able to get this close to the two fighters from the TYSON vs PAUL bout. I mean just how popular is the GITMO GAZETTE? I'm guessing not that popular. But once again, we see our boy getting within inches of these most popular events week after week. Wait what am I saying? I am the one who makes these crazy posts every week, or rather every other week now. I control the content. My bad. Sorry.

And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed). *Note to self -must pick up a case of FAKE FIGHTS Books at Home Depot this week.

I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.

I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.

Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup and go through the journal. Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that. Be forewarned it will change you forever.
